Nearly 1,000 Traffic Incidents Reported Across Houston Area on Saturday; Fatality Halts I-10 Traffic

The Greater Houston area experienced significant traffic congestion Saturday, March 21, with emergency responders handling 992 reported incidents throughout the day. The high volume of traffic events—comprising 588 major crashes and 404 minor incidents—kept area roadways congested, particularly during evening hours. Harris County accounted for the vast majority of incidents with 924 reports, while surrounding counties including Fort Bend (51), Montgomery (6), Galveston (5), Brazoria (2), Waller (2), and Milam and Liberty counties (1 each) also reported activity.

A fatal motor vehicle incident on Interstate 10 West near Exit 756B marked the most serious occurrence of the day, with authorities reporting that a person was struck by a vehicle and killed. The incident resulted in a complete freeway closure and significantly impacted westbound traffic flow. In addition to this tragedy, several major non-fatal crashes demanded immediate attention from first responders, including multiple incidents at Main Street and Broadmead Drive, Hirsch Road and Langley Road, and along major thoroughfares including IH-69 Eastex and US-59.

Interstate corridors and major feeder roads experienced particular strain throughout the evening. Notable congestion developed on IH-69 Southwest Southbound at IH-610 West Loop, IH-610 West Loop Southbound at San Felipe Street, and multiple segments of US-59, where exit ramps saw several incidents. Surface streets in central Houston, including Alabama Street, Westheimer Road, and FM 1960, also reported elevated accident activity.

Traffic safety officials urge motorists to exercise caution during evening commute hours and to remain vigilant for emergency responders. Drivers should maintain safe following distances, avoid distracted driving, and stay informed about road conditions through traffic reports before traveling.
