HOUSTON — The Houston metropolitan area faced an exceptionally challenging Monday on its roadways, with authorities responding to 1,165 traffic incidents throughout the day, including 731 major crashes that resulted in injuries and significant congestion across multiple counties.

Harris County bore the brunt of the traffic problems, accounting for 1,097 of the reported incidents, while Fort Bend County documented 56 incidents. Galveston County reported seven incidents, Montgomery County three, and Brazoria and Waller counties each reported one incident. The volume of collisions, particularly the concentration of major crashes, created widespread delays across Houston's major thoroughfares and residential areas during evening hours.

A cluster of serious collisions emerged around the evening commute period, with particularly significant incidents reported along Fondren Road, Old Spanish Trail, Beechnut Street, and multiple interstate corridors. Multiple multi-vehicle collisions were reported on the IH-610 and US-290 interchange, as well as along IH-69 Eastex near Buffalo Bayou. Additional major accidents occurred at intersections including Elgin Street and Scott Street, Country Creek Drive and Bissonnet Street, and W. Gray Street, many resulting in injuries.

Traffic safety officials urge Houston-area residents to exercise heightened caution on roadways, particularly during peak commute hours. Motorists are advised to reduce speeds in heavy traffic, maintain safe following distances, avoid distracted driving, and allow additional travel time for their commutes. Drivers should monitor real-time traffic updates and consider alternate routes when available to avoid congested areas.
