A serious multi-vehicle collision brought traffic to a standstill on the Gulf Freeway near Winkler Drive early Friday morning. The crash occurred at 4:35 AM on April 03, 2026, and left multiple people injured. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find significant vehicle damage and began treating the injured at the location.

The pre-dawn timing did little to soften the impact on the morning commute. Even at that hour, the Gulf Freeway carries consistent traffic from the south Harris County area heading toward downtown and the Energy Corridor. With a major injury crash blocking lanes, northbound and southbound traffic backed up quickly, with delays extending several miles in both directions. Drivers heading toward downtown had better luck using I-45 or surface streets through Midtown, while those heading west could divert to the feeder roads or use alternate routes through local neighborhoods to bypass the heaviest congestion.

The Gulf Freeway and Winkler Drive intersection sits in one of Harris County's busier crash corridors. Over the past 12 months, this stretch has recorded 47 major incidents, with 6 proving fatal. The frequency of serious collisions here reflects both the heavy volume of traffic that moves through the area and the complexity of navigating the interchange during peak and off-peak hours alike.

As of the time of reporting, lanes remained affected while cleanup and investigation continued. Southbound traffic experienced the heavier delays, with backups extending well past the Bellaire Boulevard exit. Drivers heading through the area Friday morning should have expected significant slowdowns and longer-than-normal travel times on both the freeway and nearby surface streets as crews worked to clear the scene.
