Houston Area Experiences Surge in Traffic Incidents Monday Night With 843 Reported Cases

📅 April 20, 2026 at 12:00 AMBy LTA Newsroom📍 Houston AreaMultiple County

The Houston metropolitan area recorded a significant spike in traffic incidents Monday, April 20, 2026, with emergency responders handling 843 total incidents throughout the day. Of those cases, 507 were classified as major crashes, while 336 remained minor incidents. Harris County accounted for the overwhelming majority of incidents with 781 reports, followed by Fort Bend County with 50 incidents. Montgomery, Galveston, and Brazoria counties reported 5, 4, and 3 incidents respectively.

The evening hours proved particularly challenging for commuters, with multiple serious accidents reported across major thoroughfares. Notable incidents included a person trapped in a vehicle following a crash on the South Loop West at 3848 South Loop, a motorcycle crash with injuries at 2701 S Gessner Road, and a hit-and-run incident at a Shell gas station on John F Kennedy Boulevard. The South Loop Westbound near Stella Link Road and Interstate 610 were particularly problematic, with multiple crashes reported in that corridor. Additionally, incidents on Interstate 69 Northbound at the Brazos River and on the Katy Freeway at North Post Oak Road caused significant congestion.

Industrial accidents were also reported during the evening, with two incidents occurring on Farm to Market Road 2234 in the Four Corners area. The South Shepherd Drive corridor near South Loop experienced multiple collisions, suggesting hazardous driving conditions in that region.

Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution when traveling through the Houston area, particularly on major thoroughfares including Interstate 610, Interstate 10, and US-59. Drivers should reduce speeds in heavy traffic, maintain increased following distances, and remain alert to emergency vehicles responding to incidents. Those experiencing mechanical difficulties are encouraged to pull to the shoulder when safe to do so rather than remaining in active traffic lanes.
