Houston Area Experiences Unusually Heavy Traffic Day with 906 Incid...

May 03, 2026 at 12:00 AMBy Dennis R. Mundy, Executive Editor📍 Greater Houston Metro

HOUSTON — The Greater Houston area experienced a significantly elevated number of traffic incidents on Sunday, May 3rd, 2026, with authorities responding to 906 total incidents throughout the day. Of those, 586 were classified as major crashes, while 320 were minor incidents. The overwhelming majority of reported incidents occurred in Harris County, which accounted for 881 of the day's accidents, with smaller numbers reported in Fort Bend County (23 incidents), and single incidents each in Galveston and Montgomery counties.

The evening hours proved particularly problematic, with a dramatic surge in traffic incidents beginning around 10 p.m. and continuing through midnight. Major crashes were reported at several critical intersections and thoroughfares, including a non-fatal crash at the Eastex Freeway at Langley Road, multiple incidents on Westheimer Road, and significant collisions on U.S. 59 North near the Lyons entrance ramp and SH-288 Southbound at Reed Road. The Southwest Freeway at Bellaire Boulevard was the site of a major accident involving a pickup truck and sedan that required emergency response.

Additional major incidents were documented throughout the evening on local arterials, including crashes at Wheeler Street, Cullen Boulevard, Amelia Road, and various locations along the city's loop system. Emergency responders were stretched thin managing the high volume of incidents, with multiple concurrent crashes reported at several locations during peak incident hours between 10:45 p.m. and 11:50 p.m.

Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution during peak traffic hours and to allow additional travel time for their commutes. Drivers should maintain safe following distances, reduce speed in heavy traffic conditions, and stay alert for emergency vehicles responding to incidents. Commuters are encouraged to check real-time traffic updates before traveling and to use alternate routes when possible to avoid congested areas.
