📅 May 03, 2026 at 12:00 AMBy LTA Newsroom📍 Houston AreaMultiple County

The Houston metropolitan area experienced significant traffic congestion over the weekend of May 1-3, 2026, with authorities responding to 3,236 total incidents across a three-day period. Of these incidents, 1,995 were classified as major crashes, underscoring the challenging driving conditions that motorists faced throughout the region. Harris County dominated the incident count with 3,122 reported incidents, while Fort Bend County recorded 98 incidents and Montgomery County reported 13 incidents. Galveston and Waller counties each reported minimal activity with two and one incidents respectively.

Friday, May 1st proved to be the most active day of the weekend, with 1,306 total incidents and 855 major crashes reported. Several serious incidents marked the evening commute period, including a major accident involving a vehicle and motorcycle at the US-59 North and Texas 288 South intersection, and a multi-vehicle incident on University Boulevard in Sugar Land. A major crash at IH-45 North near Airline Drive also contributed to Friday's elevated incident count. The concentration of serious incidents clustered in the late evening hours suggests that fatigue and reduced visibility may have played contributing factors.

Saturday, May 2nd saw a slight decrease in overall activity compared to Friday, with 1,023 total incidents and 554 major crashes reported. However, the severity of individual incidents remained notable, particularly a non-fatal major crash at 3401 Louisiana Street and multiple incidents on major thoroughfares including IH-69 Southbound near the Brazos River, the Tomball Tollway at Northpoint Boulevard, and the Katy Freeway. These incidents reflect the heavy reliance on regional freeways and toll roads during weekend travel periods.

Sunday, May 3rd experienced the lowest incident count of the three-day period with 907 total incidents and 586 major crashes reported. However, authorities noted a concerning cluster of incidents in the late evening hours, particularly multiple crashes on Old Spanish Trail and surrounding surface streets. A major crash on the East Freeway Inbound near Black Allen Street was among the most significant incidents of the final day.

Traffic safety officials observed a notable pattern across all three days: the overwhelming majority of serious incidents occurred during late evening hours, particularly between 11:30 p.m. and midnight. This trend suggests that drivers should exercise heightened caution during nighttime hours and consider avoiding peak evening travel when possible. The Houston area's continued growth and traffic volume underscore the importance of maintaining awareness while driving and adhering to all traffic safety regulations.
