Record-Breaking Day on Houston Roads: 847 Traffic Incidents Reported Wednesday

📅 May 06, 2026 at 12:00 AMBy LTA Newsroom📍 Houston AreaMultiple County

HOUSTON – Wednesday, May 6, 2026, proved to be an exceptionally challenging day for commuters across the Greater Houston area, with emergency responders fielding 847 traffic incidents throughout the day. Of those reports, 478 were classified as major crashes, while 369 were minor incidents, creating widespread congestion across multiple corridors during evening and nighttime hours.

The overwhelming majority of incidents – 809 – occurred within Harris County, establishing it as the primary traffic hotspot for the region. Fort Bend County reported 31 incidents, while Montgomery, Galveston, and Waller counties combined for just seven incidents. The concentration of activity in Harris County suggests that major thoroughfares serving the Houston metropolitan area experienced particularly severe strain.

Multiple high-traffic corridors reported significant activity, with Interstate 10 experiencing repeated major crashes, particularly in the Katy direction near Silber Road and at the I-610 West Loop connection. Interstate 45 North near Franklin Street and the I-610 South Loop at Stella Link Road also saw major incidents. The Bellaire Boulevard corridor, intersecting with Southwest Freeway, became another notable trouble spot with multiple crashes reported between 9:28 p.m. and 9:35 p.m. Additionally, emergency responders handled a vehicle fire on I-10 East near Exit 776A and responded to at least one home invasion following a vehicle break-in in the Forest North Drive area.

Traffic officials urge Houston-area drivers to exercise heightened caution on major interstates and arterial roads, particularly during evening commute hours. Motorists are advised to allow additional travel time, maintain safe following distances, and monitor real-time traffic updates before embarking on journeys. With incident reports continuing at elevated levels, residents should consider alternative routes when possible and avoid distractions while driving.
