Southwest Freeway wreck near Wilcrest early Sunday

A major crash on the Southwest Freeway inbound at Wilcrest Drive brought traffic to a halt early Sunday morning. The wreck happened at 12:37 AM on July 12, shutting down multiple lanes and backing up traffic for hours in the overnight period.

This crash marks another incident at one of the region's most active crash corridors. Over the past year, this location has seen 249 total incidents, including 130 major crashes and 4 fatalities.

The corridor shows a clear pattern of elevated crash activity on Sundays — LTA data indicates 20 crashes occurred at this location on Sundays over the past 90 days. While the single busiest hour here is typically 4 to 5 PM (with 12 crashes in that window), crashes occur at varied times throughout the day and night, making this stretch a concern during all hours.

According to TxDOT CRIS public crash records dating back to January 2020, there have been 1,128 crashes in the corridor near this location over the past six years. Contributing factors as recorded by the investigating officer, per TxDOT CRIS, show "Failed To Control Speed" as the most common cited factor, occurring in 321 of those crashes.

Harris County as a whole logged 18,148 incidents in the past 30 days, with 34 of those fatal. Weather conditions at the time of this crash — broken clouds and 80 degrees — did not appear to be a contributing factor.
