Cavalcade at Leffingwell wreck; 19 incidents in 30 days

A major crash at Cavalcade Street and Leffingwell closed the intersection Saturday morning around 7:36 AM, backing up traffic through the area as responding officers worked the scene.

The collision marks the latest incident at a location that's seen a surge in crashes over the past month. According to LocalTrafficAccidents.com data, the intersection has recorded 19 incidents in the past 30 days — 17 of them major crashes. Over the past 90 days, that number climbs to 30 total incidents, with 26 classified as major. The 12-month record is even more striking: 91 incidents at this location, 72 of them major, including 2 fatal crashes.

While Saturday's wreck occurred under clear skies with scattered clouds and temperatures around 83 degrees, the intersection's crash history extends well beyond recent months. Texas Department of Transportation crash records show 196 crashes within about a quarter-mile of this location since January 2020. Contributing factors as recorded by investigating officers, per TxDOT CRIS, show "Failed To Yield Right Of Way - Stop Sign" as the leading factor, cited in 36 crashes.

Hit-and-run incidents have also been documented at the intersection at a rate of 13.0% — 48 of the 370 units involved in crashes there over the state's tracking period. Chevrolet vehicles appeared most frequently in crash records at the location, involved in 64 incidents.

The intersection sits in Harris County, which logged 15,977 total incidents over the same 30-day period that saw 19 crashes at Cavalcade and Leffingwell. Statewide, TxDOT data shows wet conditions contributed to more than 14,000 Texas crashes in the most recent annual reporting period, though weather wasn't a factor in Saturday's incident.

Authorities cleared the scene and traffic flow was restored. This intersection continues to be among the highest-incident locations in the region month over month.
