Houston Area Traffic Week in Review: Nearly 4,800 Incidents Recorded as Wednesday Sees Dramatic Spike

**HOUSTON** — The greater Houston area experienced significant traffic congestion throughout the week of February 3-9, 2026, with 4,799 total traffic incidents reported across the region, including 2,921 major crashes that impacted commuters across multiple counties.

The week was marked by sharp fluctuations in daily incident counts, with Wednesday emerging as by far the busiest day of the seven-day period. On February 5, traffic authorities responded to 1,044 incidents, a dramatic spike compared to other days. The surge represented a 57 percent increase over Tuesday's count of 513 incidents, the week's calmest day. This volatile pattern suggests that mid-week conditions—potentially driven by construction activities, weather factors, or increased commercial traffic—created significant challenges for commuters. Friday followed as the second-busiest day with 828 incidents, while Monday rounded out the top three with 712 incidents.

Harris County dominated the incident reports, accounting for 4,511 of the week's 4,799 incidents, or approximately 94 percent of all traffic disruptions. Surrounding counties reported significantly fewer incidents: Fort Bend County recorded 197 incidents, Montgomery County 60, Galveston County 20, Brazoria County 7, with Waller and Liberty counties each reporting 2 incidents. This concentration underscores the traffic pressures facing the Houston metropolitan core and its major thoroughfares.

Weekday and weekend traffic patterns revealed distinct trends, with weekdays generally experiencing higher incident counts than weekends. Saturday recorded 596 incidents while Sunday saw 474, collectively totaling 1,070 weekend incidents. By contrast, the five weekdays (Monday through Friday) generated 3,729 incidents, indicating that commuter traffic and commercial vehicle activity during business days create substantially greater congestion challenges. Wednesday's spike, however, significantly skewed weekday averages upward, suggesting that typical Wednesday conditions may differ markedly from other business days.

A series of serious incidents underscored the dangers facing motorists throughout the week. Most notably, a fatal motorcycle crash occurred at the 12312 East Freeway on-ramp at the Holland entrance, marking one of the most severe incidents reported. Additional major crashes with injuries occurred on U.S. 59 outbound at the Bissonnet entrance ramp and on Interstate 69 Southwest at Bissonnet Street. Interstate 10 East near Federal Road experienced multiple significant crashes, including incidents that required police lane closures. Other notable incidents included a major crash at Interstate 610 East and South Loop East, and an unusual hazard involving a pedestrian walking on the Katy Freeway near North Dairy Ashford Road, which created substantial traffic disruptions.

As the Houston area continues to experience elevated traffic volumes, authorities urge motorists to exercise caution during peak travel periods and remain vigilant for hazards on major thoroughfares. Drivers are reminded to maintain safe following distances, reduce speed in congested areas, and report accidents promptly to emergency services. With the continued concentration of incidents in Harris County and repeat problem areas identified along major freeways, motorists should plan additional travel time and consider alternate routes during peak commuting hours.
